Stan Wawrinka Leads the Field at St. Petersburg Open 2017
Stan Wawrinka (Switzerland) will try to capture the title at St. Petersburg Open 2017 to be held in Russia’s Northern capital from 18th to 24th September. The organizers announced that the Roland Garros finalist has committed to play in front of St. Petersburg’s enthusiastic tennis crowd for the second consecutive time.
In an effort to do even better than last year, World No.3 Stan Wawrinka will try to take St. Petersburg by storm to hoist the trophy, after reaching the final last year.
The winner of 16 singles titles (including 3 Slams) is currently holding on to his career best number 3 position in the Emirates ATP singles rankings thanks to a very consistent showing this season so far which earned him a spot in the semifinals at the Australian Open, a place in the final at Indian Wells, a second title in Geneva and of course an impressive run at the French Open. The Swiss pulled-off an impressive win at Roland Garros over world number 1 Andy Murray in the semifinals after hitting 87 (!) winners to edge the Brit in five sets.
“I am excited to return to St. Petersburg, a city of unique history and culture whose people are very welcoming, outgoing and do know how to appreciate a good tennis match,- Wawrinka said on the occasion . – I enjoyed my time here last year – the organization, the on-court show and the hotel where we stayed were simply amazing. Hopefully, I can play well again and maybe do even better than last year.”
