On February 23, 2022, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) issued the tournament calendar for the period until the end of 2022 with changes to the ATP World Tennis Tour 250 events. The Open St. Petersburg Company that is a license holder for St. Petersburg Open has granted the rights for the 38th week for an ATP 250 tournament to the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation that will organize the tournament during the given period in Nur-Sultan.
Today the license holder of the tournament the Open St. Petersburg Company and the organizing company Formula Tennis-Xokkey together with the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) are working on upgrading the category for St. Petersburg Open. As known, in 2020 St. Petersburg successfully hosted the 25th anniversary edition of St. Petersburg Open, and the ATP granted a temporary ATP 500 status to the event.
The companies Open St. Petersburg and Formula Tennis-Xokkey showed a high level of organizational standards and proved their capability of organizing a higher status event in St. Petersburg. The ATP has received a notification of their intention to obtain a higher category for the regular competition of the city on the banks of the Neva River. The work on upgrading the category has been going on for a few years, and the Open St. Petersburg Company has confirmed their willingness to acquire the rights for an ATP 500 or ATP 1000 event.
